Abstract
Acute pharyngitis is a common respiratory disease caused by bacterial and viral infections. Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococci; GAS) is one of the prevalent pathogens that cause bacterial pharyngitis. M protein is the major virulence factor used for the classification of GAS into various emm types. emm type can be the marker of molecular epidemiological investigation of GAS diseases. In this study, S. pyogenes isolates were collected through a surveillance system and tested to determine the prevalence of pharyngitis GAS emm types in Korea. The common emm types in all isolates were emm 12.0, emm 89.0, emm 4.0, emm 1.0, and emm 12.0. However, the most prevalent GAS emm type varies in isolates collected in different years: in 2007-2009, emm 1.0; in 2009-2011, emm 12.0; and in 2015-2018, emm 28.0. In addition, emm genotypes of GAS may vary every year or with time. Hence, continuous studies are necessary to monitor the epidemiological changes of GAS in Korea.
